Detox Centres: Equipment That Will Help You Embark on a Raw Food Diet
A Water Filter:
Tap water is out of bounds for you now. Research of water contamination everywhere on the planet is scary, but tap water is the worst. Do the legwork yourself and find reports about why we should not drink it, or just get a filter. They sell them in supermarkets and some chemists.
A Juicer:
You need a juicer. It is advisable to purchase one that can juice green leaves and wheatgrass. That excludes most high street juicers. There are a few different types:
– Standard juicers (or centrifugal ones): sold in shops and ranging from quite cheap to £130+. They are easy to use and fast, but cannot do green leaves.
– Mono-auger juicers. These are small, can be a little fiddly, but can do green leaves. Manual ones are a pain, but OK when (if) you get the hang of it. They range from very cheap (manual ones) to £150+ and need to be ordered on-line.
– Masticating juicers. These are a bit like mono-augers but with some sharp cutting teeth (hence masticating). They are efficient, however there is some debate regarding whether nutrients are cut.
– Twin-Gear Juicers. These are expensive but they juice everything. They also do raw pastas, pates and ice creams, and are available on-line.
When buying a juicer, check to see if it has an attachment to do homogenising, which means that you can mash a vegetable, fruit or grain to get a paste. This can be a very useful tool, as it allows you to do raw ice-cream, humus, pâté and many bases for other dishes.
A blender This is not an essential item, however it will make your experience much more pleasurable as it will enable you to do sauces, smoothies and soups. There are many out there, the best being the most expensive: Vitamix. It is better not only because it blends to a smoother consistency, but also because it blends things other blenders cannot blend, such as nuts. (Of course it is not recommended that nuts are consumed on more than an occasional basis.)
Other Kitchen Utensils There are a lot of kitchen gadgets that can make your life easier, however they are not indispensable. These include power choppers, mandolins etc. There is however one little device that is particularly useful: a spiraliser. This is a small inexpensive tool that doesn’t need power. You put the vegetables at one end and, as you turn a handle, it slices them into spaghetti of different thickness. In less than 5 minutes you can turn any vegetable into an interesting Italian-looking dish.
A Dehydrator A serious rawfooder will have a dehydrator. It is not essential but it would allow you to dry vegetables and do crackers, biscuits, treats, chips, crisps, rolls, pancakes, loaves… All those things should never be your staple diet, but that can help if you are concerned about raw food being boring, or if you don’t want to miss out on crispy consistencies. Try buying a second-hand one first, as new ones are expensive – and you may not find you want such a chunky item around the kitchen.
