First…..you mess up and get a DUI. The ACT counselor may want further classes/sessions depending on the quiz that was filled out. If your father, who you haven’t seen since 13, has a history of drug and alcohol abuse in his youth will you really need more classes? Even though staying away from alcohol for 8 months? I’m expecting she’s just play the “denial” card and go down that path. How can you deny denial? Aside from actions. A DUI is a traffic violation. The cycle of counselors making efforts to make a buck here and there is relentless. They make their own return customers by failing them. I understand, some need help. But crap man. I guess I’m just a little apprehensive of the whole extortion game. Any advise?

Well, you could just tell them about what only applies to you. The reason they asked about your father is because addiction is genetic. Not all of them will fail a person so they can get them back and make more money off of them, some of them actually want to help a person learn to win over addiction. You get out of it what you put into it. Since you got into trouble, it sounds like you need a little help yourself. It is great that you’ve been able to stay off the booze for 8 months, but you may not be able to say no to it forever. That is addiction. Get what you can get out of the classes and leave the rest since you have to go, and in the future, work on making different choices.

Assuming that you only got a DUI and that you are not actually an addict in need of help….
LIE!!!! lie like a dog. Tell them that when you were busted it was the first time you drank. Keep any history of alcohol or drug about in the family secret. Play their little game as best as you can and do everything possible to keep your happy a$ $ out of trouble.
In late 2003 I got a DUI and I was honest about my drug history to both the councelor and my PO – not only did I get extra classes I also got sent to jail for a couple weeks. The only time you should be honest in our justice system is when you are getting a plea bargin. Its sad to say that about our legal system but it is true.
If for some reason you end up getting stupid and behind the wheel drunk and pulled over again – turn off your car, refuse any road side sobriety tests – any at all, say as little as possible and ask for a lawyer or public defender. You’ll probably loose your license but you probably can still get one for work (depending where you are at). Even then you might still end up getting nailed with more classes and possibly jail if you’re on probation.
Again I hate to say it but don’t be honest with the police at all unless you know you’re getting something out of it. Police get kick backs for busting people for DUI’s and they will resort to dirty tactics, tell you things that are not true, to get you busted. Don’t listen to them or say anything without the present of council.
Keep in mind if you get a second DUI, the system will really come down on you and make your life miserable. I’ve only got the one, but in my classes there were people who had their 4th and 5th DUIs and they were miserable.
Hopefully you learned your lesson – DON’T POKE THE BEAR!!! – or big brother. And more over don’t drink and drive.
I feel bad tell you how to play the system (at least by keeping yourself from not getting totally screwed over) but having been through a similar situation I can empathize.
