I need it to convince someone that quitting methadone cold turkey is much worse than a ‘mild case of the flu’ In fact people in jail often die from withdrawld from methadone

You are correct in discouraging your friend from trying such a detox and although many say “Withdrawal won’t kill you but you might wish you were dead” that is a FALSE STATEMENT! Like you said, people die in jail from Methadone withdrawal either directly like the case of 2 women in Florida jails which resulted in the death and subsequent implementation of an “in jail Methadone treatment program”

or you can die indirectly such as the multiple cases where inmates have committed suicide as a result of being denied their Methadone.

These are just 2 examples of suicide but there were dozens I could have listed.
The point is that Methadone is one of those meds that can be safely and almost painlessly detoxed from but it has to be extremely slow and under a doctors care. Furthermore, the relapse rate is high after discontinuing Methadone but it has been shown to be extremely high with a cruel & often deadly “cold turkey” method. So, if he must …MUST…stop the Methadone then I would suggest a slow detox via his clinic and perhaps follow with Suboxone treatment afterwards. Good Luck!
